Ben-Hur- movie 7 Ben-Hur is a 1959 American epic historical drama film directed by William Wyler, produced by Sam Zimbalist, and starring Charlton Heston as the title character. A remake of the 1925 silent film with the same title, Ben-Hur was adapted from Lew Wallace"s 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. The film tells the story of Judah Ben-Hur (Heston), a prince from Jerusalem, who is battling the Roman Empire at the time of the birth of Jesus. The film won a record 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Heston), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Stephen Boyd), and Best Cinematography, among others. It was the second-highest-grossing film of 1959, and remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time, when adjusted for inflation.
