The Great Mosque Djenne Mali 3 The Great Mosque of Djenne, located in Mali, is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. It is considered by many architects to be one of the greatest achievements of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style, with definite Islamic influences. The mosque is located in the city of Djenne, which is situated on an island in the Niger River. The city is one of sub-Saharan Africa"s oldest known towns and has been an important center of trade, learning, and Islam since the 12th century. The Great Mosque is built almost entirely from sun-dried mud bricks, and coated with a plaster which gives the building its smooth, sculpted look. The walls of the mosque are decorated with bundles of palm sticks, called toron, which also serve as ready-made scaffolding for the annual repairs. The current structure is the third mosque built on the site. The original was built in the 13th century, but was rebuilt in the 19th century. The present structure dates from 1907. The mosque is a central part of the community life in Djenne. It is the epicenter of religious activities and also serves as a gathering place for the city. Despite its age, the mosque is still in use today and is meticulously maintained by the local community. It was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
