AFL Premiership 2005 1 The 2005 AFL Premiership season was the 109th season of the Australian Football League (AFL). It began on 24 March and concluded with the 2005 AFL Grand Final on 24 September, with the Sydney Swans defeating the West Coast Eagles by 4 points to win their first premiership since 1933. The season was notable for the introduction of the controversial "bounce" rule, which allowed umpires to bounce the ball when starting play. The season also saw the introduction of the "substitute" rule, which allowed teams to replace an injured player during the game with a substitute. The season was also the first to feature the Gold Coast Suns, who joined the league as an expansion team.
