The film stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams, and depicts the complex emotional and sexual relationship between two men in the American West from 1963 to 1983. The film was a critical and commercial success, and won three Academy Awards: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score, as well as numerous other awards. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards in total, the most nominations at the 78th Academy Awards and tied for the most nominations at the 79th Academy Awards. Brokeback Mountain was the first widely released film in the United States to deal with the subject of same-sex love.
