Butch and Sundance Cassidy the Kid P 1 "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is a classic 1969 American Western film directed by George Roy Hill and written by William Goldman. The film is based on the real-life outlaws of the same names and is known for its blend of action, drama, and comedy. The film starts with Butch Cassidy (played by Paul Newman) and the Sundance Kid (played by Robert Redford) leading the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, a group of outlaws who are successful in their train robberies. They continue their life of crime in Bolivia, but the law eventually catches up with them. The film is famous for its iconic ending, where Butch and Sundance, surrounded and outnumbered, decide to go out in a blaze of glory. The film ends ambiguously, leaving their fate uncertain. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was a huge success upon its release and has since been considered one of the greatest films ever made. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Original Screenplay for Goldman.
