It was an important city in the region during the Bronze Age and was the capital of the kingdom of Idalion. The city was first mentioned in the Amarna letters, a collection of correspondence from the 14th century BC. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in the 12th century BC and abandoned. Today, the ruins of the city are located in the village of Kofinou.
