Heterospilus chaoi Heterospilus chaoi is a species of braconid wasp found in the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is a parasitoid of several species of caterpillars, including those of the family Geometridae. The female wasps lay their eggs inside the caterpillars, and when the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the caterpillar from the inside out. Eventually, the caterpillar dies and the wasp larvae emerge as adults. Heterospilus chaoi is an important natural enemy of several pest species of caterpillars, and can help to reduce their populations.
