Machairodus aphanistus 1 Machairodus aphanistus is an extinct species of saber-toothed cat that lived during the Late Miocene to Early Pliocene epochs, between 8.5 and 5.3 million years ago. It was a large carnivore, with an estimated body mass of up to 250 kg. Its most distinctive feature was its long, curved canine teeth, which were used to catch and kill prey. It is thought to have been an ambush predator, using its size and strength to overpower its prey. Its remains have been found in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
