Pachyornis elephantopus 3 The Pachyornis elephantopus was a large, flightless bird that inhabited New Zealand during prehistoric times. It belonged to the moa family, which included several species of giant birds. The Pachyornis elephantopus was one of the largest moa species, standing at over 12 feet tall and weighing around 500 pounds. It had a bulky body, long neck, and powerful legs, allowing it to move swiftly across the landscape. Sadly, like all moa species, the Pachyornis elephantopus became extinct after the arrival of humans in New Zealand.
