Palaeocastor 3 Palaeocastor is an extinct genus of rodents that lived in North America during the late Miocene and Pliocene epochs. It is believed to have been closely related to the modern beaver and was the size of a small rabbit. Palaeocastor had long, curved claws and a broad, flat tail, and it was probably a good swimmer. Its diet likely consisted of aquatic vegetation, and it may have built dams and lodges similar to those of modern beavers.
