Proscyllium venustum 1 Proscyllium venustum, also known as the ornate shark, is a species of carpet shark in the family Proscylliidae. It is found in the western Pacific Ocean from the Philippines to New Guinea, and is usually found in shallow waters on coral reefs. It is a small species, growing to a maximum length of just under 60 cm. It has a long, slender body with a long snout and a prominent pair of barbels near the mouth. The dorsal surface is grayish-brown with dark spots and blotches, while the ventral surface is white. The ornate shark is an oviparous species, with females laying pairs of egg capsules in shallow water.
