It is a member of the subfamily Myrmicinae, and is one of the few species of ants that practice agriculture. The ants cultivate a species of fungus, which they use as their primary food source. The ants have also been observed to collect and store seeds, and to tend to mealybugs and scale insects, which they use as a secondary food source.
