This species is part of the genus Trigonopterus, which includes over 100 different species of beetles. The Trigonopterus kanawiorum is native to Papua New Guinea. Like other beetles in this genus, the Trigonopterus kanawiorum is a small, flightless beetle. The species was discovered and described by Alexander Riedel, Raden Pramesa Narakusumo in 2019. The specific name, "kanawiorum", is in honor of the Kanawi family who hosted the researchers during their field work in Papua New Guinea. These beetles are known for their unique, cryptic lifestyle, often living in leaf litter, rotting wood, or under the bark of trees. Their exact diet is not well known, but they are believed to feed on plant matter.
