The event is described as an experiment in community and art, influenced by ten main principles: radical inclusion, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy, and leave no trace. The event takes place over the course of a week, beginning on the last Monday in August, and ending on the first Monday in September, which coincides with the American Labor Day holiday. It has been held annually since 1986.
