jean luc ponty Jean-Luc Ponty is a French jazz violinist and composer. He is renowned for his use of electric amplification and for his influence on jazz and world music. He is also known for his pioneering use of the violin in jazz fusion. Ponty was born in Avranches, France in 1942. He began studying classical violin at the age of five, and by the age of thirteen he was already playing in a local orchestra. He went on to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, and soon after began playing with some of the top jazz musicians in France. In the late 1960s, Ponty began to experiment with jazz-rock fusion, and his first album in this style, King Kong, was released in 1969. He then released a series of albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, exploring various jazz-rock fusion styles. He also released a number of albums with his own jazz-fusion group, the Jean-Luc Ponty Experience. Ponty has collaborated with many other musicians, including Frank Zappa, Stanley Clarke, Al Di Meola, and Chick Corea. He has also composed several film scores, and has released several solo albums. Ponty has been awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France"s highest honor for artistic achievement.
