Garcia formed the Grateful Dead in 1965, along with Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann. The band became known for their unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, country, jazz, bluegrass, blues, gospel, and psychedelic rock. They also became famous for their live performances, which often included lengthy instrumental jams. Garcia was also known for his distinctive guitar playing style and his emotional, soulful vocals. He was considered the band"s leader and primary songwriter, and his songs often featured themes of love, loss, and life on the road.
