jimi hendrix 5 Jimi Hendrix is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington, he later changed his name to James Marshall Hendrix in honor of his father, James "Al" Hendrix. Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. After moving to Clarksville, Tennessee, he earned three years of experience touring on the Chitlin" Circuit, a series of venues throughout the eastern, southern, and upper midwest areas of the United States that were safe and acceptable for African American musicians, comedians, and other entertainers to perform during the era of racial segregation in the United States. In 1966, Hendrix was discovered by Linda Keith, who was at the time the girlfriend of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Keith recommended him to Chas Chandler, who was leaving the Animals and was interested in managing and producing artists. Chandler was impressed with Hendrix"s performance and signed him to a management and production contract. Hendrix quickly gained fame and commercial success. His rock-infused interpretation of the "Star-Spangled Banner" from the 1969 Woodstock festival became a defining moment of the 1960s counterculture. He won many of the most prestigious rock music awards in his lifetime and has been posthumously awarded more. Sadly
