Joaqun Sorolla 7 Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was a Spanish painter, born on February 27, 1863, in Valencia, Spain. He is known for his detailed, luminous, and colorful paintings, often depicting beach scenes, landscapes, and historical events. Sorolla"s style is often associated with both Impressionism and Luminism, emphasizing the effects of light on color and texture. One of his most famous works is a series of large-scale paintings called "The Provinces of Spain," which he worked on from 1912 to 1919. These paintings depict the regional customs and traditional dress from various parts of Spain. Sorolla was also a renowned portrait artist, painting notable figures of his time, including King Alfonso XIII of Spain and U.S. President William Howard Taft. Sorolla died on August 10, 1923, in Cercedilla, Spain. Today, his former home and studio in Madrid is a museum dedicated to his life and work.
