arms 0042 The coat of arms of the City of London is the official heraldic arms of the City of London, which is one of the three legal jurisdictions within Greater London. The arms were first granted to the City of London in 1537 by King Henry VIII and are based on the arms of the Duchy of Lancaster. The arms consist of a shield divided into four quarters, each of which is charged with a symbol of the City"s history and identity. The top left quarter of the shield is charged with a cross representing the City"s Christian faith, while the top right quarter is charged with a sword representing justice and the protection of the City"s liberties. The bottom left quarter is charged with a ship, symbolising the City"s maritime history, while the bottom right quarter is charged with a portcullis, symbolising the City"s historic status as a fortified city. The shield is surmounted by a crest, which consists of a dragon, representing the City"s strength and power, and a crown, representing the City"s status as a royal city. The shield is also surrounded by a mantling of red and ermine, and is supported by two unicorns, representing purity and strength.
