It is used by the Pope to open the Jubilee Year, a special year of spiritual renewal and indulgences granted by the Catholic Church. The door is opened at the beginning of the Jubilee Year and closed at the end. During the Jubilee Year, pilgrims may pass through the Holy Door to gain a plenary indulgence, a full remission of the temporal punishment due to sins.
