Multi-tiered iconostasis An iconostasis (or iconostas; Russian: иконостас) is a wall of icons and religious paintings, separating the nave from the sanctuary in a church. Iconostases are often multi-tiered, with two or three tiers typically used in Orthodox churches. The tiers usually consist of rows of icons depicting various saints, angels, and the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary). The lower tier typically includes icons of the Twelve Great Feasts, and the top tier often includes icons of the four evangelists. The middle tier may include icons of the major feasts of the church year, and icons of the patron saint of the church.
