Holy King Vladislav of Serbia Vladislav (Serbian: Владислав/Vladislav; c. 1130 – 12 May 1173) was the King of Serbia from 1162 to 1166, succeeding his brother Stephen III. Vladislav was the son of Grand Prince Uroš I of Serbia and his wife, Helen of Hungary. He was born in the 1130s, and was probably still a child when his father died in 1145. His brother Stephen III succeeded their father as Grand Prince of Serbia. Vladislav was crowned King of Serbia in 1162, after Stephen III"s death. He was a minor at the time, and his mother Helen acted as regent. During his reign, Serbia was invaded by the Byzantine Empire, which sought to restore its control over the region. Vladislav was unable to repel the invasion, and in 1166 he was forced to abdicate in favor of his brother, Stephen IV. Vladislav retired to a monastery, where he died in 1173. He was succeeded by his brother Stephen IV, who reigned until 1168.
