Holy Great Martyr George the Trophy-Bearer. The Great Martyr George the Trophy-Bearer (, ) is one of the most venerated saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is one of the most prominent military saints, and in the Greek and Russian Orthodox traditions, he is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. George was born in Cappadocia in the third century to a Christian family. He was raised in a pious Christian household and became a soldier in the Roman army. At the age of twenty-two, he was martyred for his faith in 303 during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. George is most commonly depicted in icons as a young man in armor on a white horse, slaying a dragon with a spear. He is also often shown with a palm branch in his hand, symbolizing his victory over death. His feast day is celebrated on April 23 in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
