St. Peter Metropolitan of Moscow , Peter I The first Metropolitan of Moscow, Peter I, was a Greek monk who was born in the early 15th century in the city of Thessaloniki. He was a disciple of St. Maximos the Greek, who was one of the most influential theologians of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Peter was sent to Moscow in 1448 by the Patriarch of Constantinople, where he was consecrated as the first Metropolitan of Moscow. He was a great reformer and spiritual leader, and he was instrumental in the spread of Orthodox Christianity in Russia. He also helped to establish the Russian Orthodox Church as an independent entity from the Greek Orthodox Church. He died in 1461 and was buried in the Church of the Ascension in Moscow.
