Saint James Saint James, also known as Saint James the Greater, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He is the patron saint of Spain and is often depicted as a pilgrim with a staff and a scallop shell, symbols of his role as the patron saint of pilgrims. Saint James is believed to have preached the Gospel in Spain and was martyred in Jerusalem in the year 44 AD. His feast day is celebrated on July 25th.
