Priest Martyr George the Victorious , the Great Martyr and Unmercenary Physician George (Greek: Γεώργιος, Geṓrgios; died 303), also known as George of Lydda, was a Christian martyr, venerated as a saint in Christianity. He is one of the most venerated saints in the Eastern Orthodox Church, and in the Catholic Church, which commemorates him on April 23. The traditional account of Saint George"s martyrdom is that he was born to a Christian family in Lydda, in the Roman province of Syria Palaestina, during the late third century. He was a soldier in the Roman army and was martyred in 303 for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. George is one of the most venerated saints in the Eastern Orthodox Church, and is also venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Communion, and Coptic Orthodox Church. He is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, and is also one of the most prominent military saints. His feast day is celebrated on April 23, and he is also venerated as the patron saint of England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, and several other countries.
