Chess pieces Knights The knight is a piece in the game of chess, representing a knight (armored cavalry). It is normally represented by a horse"s head and neck. Each player starts the game with two knights, which begin on the row closest to the player, between the rooks and bishops. The knight moves in an "L" shape, two squares horizontally and then one square vertically, or two squares vertically and then one square horizontally. The knight is the only piece that can jump over other pieces. It is also unique in that it is the only piece that can move to a square of either color.
