Jack Torrance The Shining Jack Nicholson Jack Torrance is a fictional character and the main antagonist in Stephen King"s horror novel The Shining (1977). He is portrayed by Jack Nicholson in the 1980 film adaptation of the same name. Torrance is a writer and former teacher who accepts a position as the off-season caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He is accompanied by his wife Wendy and their young son Danny, who possesses "the shining", an array of psychic abilities that allow Danny to see the hotel"s horrific past. Torrance"s own inner demons and the supernatural forces of the hotel slowly drive him insane, leading him to attempt to murder his family.
