She is the head housekeeper at Manderley, the estate of the novel"s protagonist, Maxim de Winter. Mrs. Danvers is a cold, sinister figure who is fiercely devoted to the memory of Maxim"s late wife, Rebecca, and is determined to prevent the new Mrs. de Winter from taking her place. She is eventually driven to suicide when she realizes that her beloved Rebecca is gone forever.
