ARNOLFINI MARRIAGE 6 The Arnolfini Marriage, also known as the Arnolfini Portrait, is a 15th-century oil painting on oak panel by the Early Netherlandish painter Jan van Eyck. It is considered one of the most important works of art of the Northern Renaissance, as well as one of the most iconic paintings in the world. The painting is full of religious symbolism, including the two figures wearing wedding rings, the depiction of the marriage of Mary and Joseph in the background, and the Latin inscription on the frame. The painting is believed to be a wedding portrait of Italian merchant Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife, but its true meaning is still debated.
