ptarmigan 1 The ptarmigan is a small, ground-dwelling bird native to the Arctic and subarctic regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. It is the only species in the genus Lagopus. The ptarmigan is a medium-sized game bird, with a body length of about 25–30 cm (10–12 in) and a wingspan of about 60–70 cm (24–28 in). It has a plump body, short tail, and short, rounded wings. Its plumage is white in winter and mottled brown in summer, with the exception of the white tail feathers, which remain white year-round.
