Gone with the Wind 8 . Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American epic historical romance film adapted from Margaret Mitchell"s 1936 novel of the same name. The film was produced by David O. Selznick and directed by Victor Fleming. It stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland, and Hattie McDaniel, and tells the story of Scarlett O"Hara, the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner, from her romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes, whom she ultimately loses to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton, to her marriage to Rhett Butler. The film won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actress for Leigh, as well as the first Best Supporting Actress award for McDaniel. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until it was surpassed by Gone with the Wind"s own remake, the 1959 version of Ben-Hur.
