The Kings New Dress Hans Christian Andersen 1837 11 Once upon a time there was a king who was very fond of new clothes. He spent all his money on dressing himself in the finest clothes he could find. One day, two swindlers came to the court and promised to make the most beautiful clothes for the king. They said that these clothes were so special that they were invisible to anyone who was stupid or incompetent. The king was so pleased with the idea that he immediately ordered the swindlers to make the clothes. They pretended to work for days, but in reality they were just making a show of it. When the clothes were finished, the king asked his courtiers to tell him how beautiful they were. Of course, no one could see anything, but they were too afraid to say so. Instead, they all praised the clothes and said how wonderful they looked. The king was delighted and went out to show off his new clothes. As he paraded through the streets, the people were amazed at the sight of the king wearing nothing at all. Finally, a small child pointed out that the king had nothing on. The people began to laugh and the king realized he had been tricked. He quickly ran back to the palace, embarrassed and ashamed. The swindlers were arrested and punished for their deception. The king learned his lesson and never again was fooled by such cunning tricks.
