It is sometimes called the world"s first novel, the first modern novel, the first psychological novel or the first novel still to be considered a classic. It is the story of Prince Genji, his loves and his political intrigues, and is considered one of the greatest works of Japanese literature. The original manuscript no longer exists, but the work was passed down orally and eventually written down in the early 12th century.
