E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 4 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 American science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg. It tells the story of Elliott (Henry Thomas), a young boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help E.T. return to his home planet, while attempting to keep him hidden from the government. The film stars Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, and Robert MacNaughton, and features special effects by Carlo Rambaldi and Dennis Muren. It was written by Melissa Mathison and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Spielberg. The film was released on June 11, 1982, and became a blockbuster, grossing over $792 million worldwide during its theatrical run. It was the highest-grossing film of 1982 and, adjusted for inflation, is one of the top-grossing films of all time. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won four, including Best Visual Effects. The American Film Institute ranked it as the third greatest science fiction film of all time in 2008. In 2016, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, deeming it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
