Tonto 1 Tonto is a fictional Native American character who first appeared in the 1933 film The Lone Ranger. He is the faithful Native American companion of the Lone Ranger, a masked ex-Texas Ranger. Tonto speaks in broken English and often uses the phrase "kemo sabe" (meaning "trusty scout" or "faithful friend" in the fictional language of the Potawatomi). He is portrayed as a wise and loyal friend who is willing to go to great lengths to help the Lone Ranger.
