It is situated in the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde, on the border with the Czech Republic, 12 km northwest of Auerbach, and 19 km southeast of Chemnitz. The town has a population of around 5,000. The town was first mentioned in 1371 and was part of the Bohemian Crown until 1635. It became part of Saxony in 1815.
