It is the oldest cathedral in Denmark and the most important example of Danish Brick Gothic architecture. The cathedral was founded in the 12th century and expanded several times in the following centuries. It was the first Gothic cathedral to be built of brick and its construction greatly influenced the development of brick architecture in Northern Europe. The cathedral is the burial site of Danish monarchs, including Christian IV and Frederick IX. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
