Abul-Abbas elephant famous animal 2 Abul-Abbas was an elephant that was given as a gift to the Abbasid Caliph Al-Ma"mun in 827 CE. He was known for his intelligence and loyalty and was given the title "Chief of the Elephants of the Caliphate". He was reportedly capable of understanding human speech and could even recognize and respond to his own name. He was also known for his ability to perform tricks and play musical instruments. He was so beloved by the Caliph that he was given a luxurious palace to live in and a special staff to care for him. He died in 837 CE, and his body was buried with full honors.
