Giganotosaurus 4 Giganotosaurus was a large carnivorous dinosaur that lived in what is now South America during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 98 to 97 million years ago. It was one of the largest terrestrial carnivores ever to have lived, with an estimated length of 40 to 45 feet (12 to 14 meters) and a weight of 8 to 9 tons (7.3 to 8.2 metric tons). It had a long, narrow skull and large, powerful jaws filled with sharp teeth. Its long, muscular tail was likely used for balance while running. Giganotosaurus was an apex predator, preying on large dinosaurs such as sauropods and other large theropods.
