Badlands 1 Badlands is a 1973 American crime drama film written and directed by Terrence Malick, and starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. The story follows two young lovers, Kit (Sheen) and Holly (Spacek), as they flee across the Badlands of South Dakota in the late 1950s. The film is loosely based on the real-life story of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate, two teenagers who murdered 11 people in 1958. Badlands was Malick"s first feature film, and is widely regarded as one of the best films of the 1970s.
