Before the Law Franz Kafka 1915 9 Before the Law is a parable contained in the novel The Trial by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. It tells the story of a man from the country who seeks the law, but is blocked from entering by a doorkeeper. Despite his many pleas and attempts to gain access, the doorkeeper refuses to let him in. The man eventually dies without ever having gained access to the law. The parable is seen as an allegory for the frustration of human attempts to gain access to ultimate truth and justice.
