Before the Law Franz Kafka 1915 16 Before the Law is a short story by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915 in the collection of short stories titled Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer (The Great Wall of China). The story follows a man from the country who is trying to gain access to the law, but is blocked by a doorkeeper. He is told that he can enter only when he is given permission, but he never receives it. The story is seen as an allegory for the struggles of life and the idea of justice being unattainable.
