Beloved Toni Morrison 1987 6 Beloved is a 1987 novel by Nobel Prize-winning American author Toni Morrison. The novel, her fifth, is loosely based on the story of an African-American slave, Margaret Garner, and is set after the American Civil War (1861–1865). It is inspired by the life and legal case of the slave, and is noted for its uncommonly vivid prose and its intense examination of the horrors of slavery and its effects on African Americans. The book was chosen by the Book-of-the-Month Club as the best novel of 1987 and received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988. It was adapted into a 1998 film of the same name.
