Beloved Toni Morrison 1987 19 Beloved is a 1987 novel by Nobel Prize-winning American author Toni Morrison. The novel, her fifth, is loosely based on the 1856 story of an African-American slave, Margaret Garner, who escaped slavery in Kentucky late January 1856 by fleeing to Ohio, a free state. In the novel, the protagonist Sethe is also a former slave who escapes to Ohio. Sethe kills her infant daughter rather than allow her to be taken back into slavery. The story of Sethe is narrated by a mysterious presence, and it is filled with supernatural elements. Beloved won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988.
