Cabaret 1972 8 .0 Cabaret is a 1972 American musical drama film directed by Bob Fosse and starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York, and Joel Grey. Set in 1931 Berlin, the film is loosely based on the 1966 Broadway musical of the same name, which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood"s 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin. Cabaret tells the story of American cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young English academic Brian Roberts, as well as the relationship between the proprietor of the cabaret, the Master of Ceremonies, and his relationship with his girlfriend. The film is noted for its musical numbers and features the song "Cabaret" by Kander and Ebb, as well as other popular songs of the era. Cabaret was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won eight, including Best Actress for Minnelli, Best Supporting Actor for Grey, and Best Director for Fosse.
