It is situated to the north of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and is bounded in the north by the Dabie Mountains. Huanggang has an area of 17,446 km2 (6,741 sq mi) and a population of 6,117,876 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Hubei province after Wuhan. The city"s administrative area covers a large area of southern Hubei, including the city"s urban area and suburban districts, as well as several counties in the northern part of the province. The city is served by Huanggang Port.
