Hughes Memorial Tower A 5 -story tower in downtown Houston, Texas, the Hughes Memorial Tower was built in 1929 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was designed by noted Houston architect Alfred C. Finn and is one of the few remaining examples of early skyscraper design in the city. The tower was built as a memorial to the late William Marsh Rice, the founder of Rice University. The tower is constructed of steel and brick, and features a clock at the top. The clock has four faces, each of which is illuminated at night. The tower stands at a height of 120 feet and is a prominent feature of the Houston skyline.
