jimi hendrix 3 Jimi Hendrix is considered one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. He was born on November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington, and died on September 18, 1970, in London, England. Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. After a short stint in the army, he began working as a session guitarist under the name Jimmy James. By the end of 1965, he had formed his own band, Jimmy James and the Blue Flames, which caught the attention of Chas Chandler, former bassist of The Animals, who became his manager. Chandler brought Hendrix to London, where he formed a new band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. The band was a huge success in the UK, with their first single, "Hey Joe," reaching the top ten on the UK charts in early 1967. Hendrix"s innovative style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form. He was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. His most well-known songs include "Purple Haze," "Foxy Lady," "Voodoo Child," "All Along the Watchtower," and "The Wind Cries Mary
