They are commonly known as water boatmen, due to their habit of swimming on their backs with their legs paddling the surface of the water. They are found in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams in temperate and tropical regions. They feed on algae, small invertebrates, and plant material. The larvae of some species are predatory, feeding on small aquatic organisms.
